Hawk-tober

Hmmm...what's that little brown thing on the pillar?

Ooooh!

Ooops!  Did it sense me staring?  Hawk eye, indeed!

Walk around to the other window for a better view...

A bird guy says it's an immature Red Tail.  There have been multiple scrub jays, mockingbirds, and squirrels active in the back neighbor's oak tree, looking for fresh acorns.

Hawk had a discreet view from that perch.  Go for the squirrels, please!

    1. Good timing it was. Hawk-vember didn't sound as good.

  2. Now that's a great closeup! Did you take your photos from inside the house or were you carrying your camera when he set down? The hawks used to roost in the mimosa tree here on occasion, which sometimes gave me a good shot, although opening the screen door to get a closer look usually sent them packing. These days they stalk their prey from atop the huge pine in the the neighbor's garden behind us but, even with a telephoto lens, it's hard to get a really good shot.

    1. From indoors. I was eating lunch and happened to look up. The camera was at hand and luckily had the card in it. I've had them land right in front of me scaring us both, but was I holding the camera? Of course not.

Your neighbor's huge pine providing a look out helps the raptors get your intruders. A good thing!

  3. Whoa - THAT addition will totally change the wildlife dynamic in your backyard. My cat took a squirrel the other day. I gave him an extra treat for that!

  4. Very handsome creatures - and if they eat the squirrels all the better (maybe it can grab a few gophers and moles too). They make an occasional appearance around here but I never have my camera handy - nice shots!

    1. Amazing the birds all seem to know when the gardener is in the garden and the camera is in the house.

  5. That's exciting! I'm always happy to see hawks in the garden, too...as the others say, they eat smaller mammals...although for me, it's the rabbits I'm glad to see go bye-bye. Great photos of your regal visitor.
