We had a heat wave a few days ago,
Not everything was damaged, though...
The floral highlights this month are Leucospermums, Roses, and Hippeastrums. Calylophus, Metrosideros 'Springfire', and Didelta are supporting players. Salvias, Grevilleas, and Lavenders are among the year-round constants.
First flower ever from 'Red Sunset'. Does the flower turn red as it ages? I ask because it doesn't look all that red at the moment. Time will tell.
'Drop Dead Red' almost dropped dead:
'Moondance':
The Rhodanthemum needs a sheering:
Calylophus 'Southern Belle' is at peak, too. Its peak lasts for months.
The original Leucospermum 'Yellow Bird'. The one three photos ago is a seedling of this one:
Having one on each side of the driveway is nice.
More yellow from Didelta 'Silver Strand'. I had no idea it would do this:
Yet more yellow: tomato flowers. A little more effort on this gardener's part means the tomatoes are growing much better this year.
Salvia 'Wendy's Wish' flowers year round.
One plant of an annual Verbena planted last spring is hanging on. Here with Cerinthe:
'Belinda's Dream' holds up to heat very well:
Alstroemeria 'Rock n Roll'
Russelia:
The garden Hippeastrums--'Rilona' and 'Apple Blossom':
'Rilona':
'Apple Blossom':
First Clematis flowers--'Wisley':
'Perle d'Azur':
'The President' with Callistemon 'Slim':
One of the Garvinea series of Gerberas. They bloom from late winter into early summer. Flowering shuts down for the heat of summer and autumn:
Many of the 'Golden Celebration' roses fried in the heat, but not all of them:
Self-seeded begonia and Lobelia under the pond equipment. They both did this last year, too.
'Fourth of July' rose looked so bad this past autumn I thought it was time to remove it. A strong dose of fertilizer was all it needed. Pink 'Charles Rennie Mackintosh' rose below.
'Snowbird' lost some flowers to the heat, but there were still plenty left.
'Julia Child':
'Sunbelt Savannah':
'Easy Spirit':
Best for last? 'Princesse Charlene de Monaco':
Bloom Day is the 15th of each month to celebrate the flowers of the moment, and was created by author Carol J. Michel.
Lovely! How big does your 'Wendy's Wish' salvia get there? I've grown it before here and it gets huge (at least 5'). Of course it is an annual here.
ReplyDeleteI constantly pinch ,deadhead, and remove the oldest stems on the 'Wish' Salvias to keep them looking their best, but they will get 5' here, too. The hummers love them, and so do .I
Delete'Yellow Bird' in bloom with the blue and silver agaves is a fabulous moment. And the rhodanthemum looks really good with 'Blue Glow' too. I should have planted my didelta in the ground in Long Beach! Even after all that heat it all looks so fresh.
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for the Didelta to do something bad, because what plant is perfect? Still waiting where the Didelta is concerned.
DeleteDespite the singed roses here and there, your garden is looking spring-tific! I was also hugely surprised by the profusion of blooms on Didelta 'Silver Strand', which I photographed before it peaked. I'm planning to add some cuttings in the driest section of my street-side bed to see what happens. I LOVE your Russelia trailing down that wall - my own plant has always looked underwhelming but that's a perfect setting to show it at its best. (Now if I only had a wall like that...) I'm also very impressed with your Hippeastrums and can only hope that mine provide a display like that in future years as I plant more of the bulbs into garden beds.
ReplyDeleteI've not tried Didelta without reasonably good irrigation. Interested to see yours do in a dry place.
DeleteMonrovia sells (or sold) a somewhat shrubbier, less draping version of Russelia. It might work better for you until a wall appears.
Hippeastrums have been ridiculously easy. You should soon have too many--more gifts for neighbors.
Your Didelta continues to impress. Have you ever seen it for sale again? Mine died because I didn't water it enough to get established. I want to try it again.
ReplyDeleteAlstroemeria 'Rock 'n Roll' is so tempting. I'd love to try one in a pot. Keeping my eyes open now...
Come to think of it, since I've done a bit of plant shopping recently, no, not seen the Didelta for sale. 'Rock n Roll' is pretty wild looking. A nice touch of visual crazy.
DeleteWhoa! That Russelia is fantastic dripping down that wall like that. Just fabulous! I just planted a Golden Celebration in a client's garden. Holy smokes - how tall is yours? I was thought it topped out at around 5-6'... Now I'm thinking I might have to move it....
ReplyDeleteThe effect of certain plants against all the plain beige walls here can be great. Black Aeoniums also winners. The Russelia and the 'Blue Glow' Agaves and the wall are a fine trio. Downside of the walls is fierce reflected heat. A lot of plants can't handle it.
DeleteThat GC will get 10-12' but longer growing season here, plus it gets high N fertilizer. Low N probably better. The rest of the garden needs high N, so that's what I buy.
That Russelia and Agave 'Blue Glow' photo, dreamy!
