Blooms September 2024

 Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Candy'

The garden took a beating during our five(?) or so days of 100F weather.  So just a few highlights this month.

The Dahlias seemed to endure extreme heat the best.

The Lagerstroemias are finishing up.

Drimia maritima bulbs are peaking.
With Aloe reitzii:
The usual roses, like 'Bolero 2024':
An unimpressive 'Cafe Au Lait' Dahlia.  Too much shade.  Must move when they wake up next year:
Not all that bad for after a bad heat wave:
This Hydrangea stem waited until after the heat wave.
Zephyranthes candida with 'Rozanne' Geranium and the purple foliage of an Alternathera
'Silas Marner' with Salvia 'Mystic Spires Blue':
Pelargonium pelatum with Pelargonium sidoides
Happy blooms.  Autumn is almost here!

  1. Very nice! Sorry to hear about the heat. I hope it cools down soon.

  2. Looking good, HB - especially for late summer! I looked for Drimia flowers following your last post and found no evidence of any despite the fact that I have 5 bulbs down there and all produced foliage this spring. The fire ants keep me away from the back slope during the summer months, which means they don't get the water they probably want to bloom. (There's no irrigation in their immediate area.) I plan to move at least some of them to a more hospitable site this fall.

    1. The Drimias in the picture get a little irrigation. Perhaps the ants are taking some of their moisture? They seem to store moisture in their massive root system.

Yes garden looks surprisingly good for September--two winters of good rain made a big difference.

  3. Hemerocallis bloom this late in the season?? What a treat. 'Strawberry Candy' looks stunning against the purple foliage. Probably the same Alternathera that's matched up so beautifully with Zephyranthes and Geranium in a later photo. Is there anything that doesn't go well with purple?

    1. Several Hems still flowering. I gave them some liquid fertilizer and a new round of flowers was their response. Yes the same Alternathera. Just the one which I rooted from a cutting from a friend. I took more cuttings to root. I love that purple foliage! Yes indeedy it goes with everything.

  4. You are so great at combos, just gorgeous. You'd never know you had 5 days of heat. I've tried 2 of those cafe au lait, and they haven't been very generous with the blooms. I like that crooked Drimia flower spike!

    1. I think there is still such a demand for 'Cafe Au Lait' that the growers sell whatever they can produce, healthy or not.

  5. Slim pickens' around here, but I do still have Zinnias. Did you grow the Alternanthera from seeds ? I did this year and they were shockingly easy. The variety I grew was 'Purple Prince' from Swallowtail seeds in Santa Rosa.

    1. I asked a friend for a little cutting of her Alternathera. It rooted quite easily but was slow to grow. Did not get many zinnias because I planted the seeds way too late, but the few ones I got brought joy with them.

Thanks for the tip on growing Alternathera from seed I will try that! The foliage is gorgeous and makes a wonderful accent. They seem to be year round plants in San Diego area. Its a tiny bit warmer at night in winter there than here. Perhaps a few degrees makes the difference.
