The first sun drinks the dregs of night.
As September begins, the light changes. Our typical right-after-Labor-Day heat wave takes hold. It's time to be stuck indoors complaining about the weather.
Destined to toast:
Sigh.
Best to enjoy them now. Take some photos.
Cut and bring indoors.
Water early in the morning, and right before sunset, in hopes of keeping the most vulnerable alive.
Coming indoors!
Be careful. It's hot outside.
There. I've sat in the house and complained about the weather. Job done.
We are having the heatwave up here too-but not as bad as the last one. I only had to turn on the AC one day. A win ! I remember the olden days when I was a kid the heatwaves were always in September (unless you lived in The Valley) but now they seem to show up earlier. I only lived a few miles from the ocean though so that moderated things. Your Dahlias look great ! Mine look like crapola. I'm blaming the July heatwave.
ReplyDeleteThe one your region had in early summer was horrible. I count us here south of you as lucky we missed that one.
DeleteYes that's what I remember, the 2-3 day (not week long) heatwaves came in September. We were also not far from the Pacific, about 7 miles. I would ride my bike down Marine Avenue to Aviation to the Hermosa Beach Pier and then along the beach. Long ago and far away.
Dahlias better this year. I put them in the ground. In pots they were not that happy.
Oh, I was so over it yesterday! I love the photo of the cosmo with the blue flowers, so rich. You're right, shorter days are on their way.
ReplyDeleteI was over it before it began, haha! 100F, yuck. You are lucky to have a pool to jump into.
DeleteBeautiful, beautiful blooms and images. We will have a September "heat wave" in the next couple of weeks, too, but I'm sure not as hot as yours. Actually, I consider it "perfect" weather--highs in the low to mid-80s for two full weeks. Yay. Thanks for sharing the beauty of your garden!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the beautiful weather. That sounds just right. Our summer was not bad up until now.
DeleteHappy you liked the pictures, thank you!
It is hot outside! 102 here yesterday under smoky skies, today should be a couple of degrees cooler but the smoke (fires in Eastern OR) ramps up. Right now (9:40 am) the sky is grey and the sun is casting strange light. Thankfully it's not supposed to last beyond tomorrow. I hope your sky remains blue.
ReplyDeleteSmoke very very bad. Sorry to hear about the fires--they are terrible. Clear here so far--there are patrols here watching, though there is no wind. Heat+wind is what gets us in trouble.
DeleteI love those pretty pictures! We peaked at 102F yesterday. It was 88F last night at 11pm and already 87F at 7:30am. Yuck! But then my brother in Woodland Hills faced off against 116F yesterday so everything is relative. Like you, I'm giving the most vulnerable plants water in the early morning and I managed to get the remainder of my mulch (or what I had on hand anyway) spread yesterday morning before things got ugly. It looks like we can expect relief by Tuesday...
ReplyDeleteWe hit 109F yesterday. Double yuck. Deep cleaning here and there indoors, quick jaunts outside to water. The pups hustle out and do not linger. They want to come right back in the house! Take care out there, enjoy Meeko!
DeleteYep, grumpy about the heat up here in Oregon too. Already lost one of the Hinkley plants I purchased on the tour. Oh well, there's another one out there somewhere! I really like the combination of the white cosmos with the blue agapanthus.
ReplyDeleteA Hinkley plant?!? Drat! 🤬 Sorry to hear that.
