Work The Problem

$%%^#@ *%%#@%$^^!

Lost a beautiful Agave ovatifolia to a *%%#@%$^^ gopher (I think).

Gnaw marks on what was once the central growth point:

Back in March, BG (before gopher):

It gets worse.

Back in March, BG:

All three of those beauties are goners.

Nothing I can do but work the problem.  Clean up the mess, trap the gopher.  No time to regret or grieve.  Work the problem.

The sky is still beautiful.

The Aloes are pushing out bloom stalks.

 The roses still bloom.

Just work the problem until it is solved.

  1. Oh, no! So hard to look at photos of those gorgeous Agave, now core-less. Heartbreaking. (Are Agaves particularly susceptible to gophers?).
'Work the problem' is a line from the movie I love, 'The Martian'. A good philosophy for life that helps manage unpredicted challenges. Don't forget to breathe.

    1. Based on my experience, yes, particularly subsceptible to gophers. :^(

"Work the problem" also in Apollo 13, when Ed Harris as Gene Kranz, Flight Director tells everyone in Mission Control to quit panicking and...you know. :)

  2. Oof. I immediately dropped a swear word at the sight of your agave. But, you're right - GET the gopher! And move on. Your partially sunny sky is gorgeous.

    1. The sky here was fabulous yesterday. John Constable would have approved.

      Yes, the gopher!

  3. OMG... I had no idea. So the little &*#$@! eats the center of the agave from underneath? I am so sorry.

  5. OMG! That's incredible (in the worst possible use of that word). At one point, I'd read that gophers didn't like succulents but I guess that suggestion can be thrown in the trash. I'm sorry you lost such beautiful plants.

  6. The last two years I have had gophers for the first time since I moved into this garden 30+ years ago. So far they have shown no interest in any of my in-ground agaves. I now plant things of value that I think might be of interest to the little $$%#!!s in gopher baskets. I have spoken to the cat about possibly withholding treats . We shall see.

  7. I tried to post a comment yesterday but, for some reason, it's disappeared. I'm sorry for the loss of those beautiful agaves. I thought "my" gophers were vicious but yours are on a whole other level.

  8. I had no idea gophers did this. I would be absolutely livid and beyond #$%@#$%@#$%!!!!, approaching apoplectic proportions. I hope you get the little #$@#$^#^$! soon.
