Stems not visible on this Dudleya, but again, blue foliage with pink tips.  Seems to be a trend here this January.

All sorts of pink and blue in the garden, but the foliage wonder of this January are the local hills.  They are a color we have not seen for several years because of the drought, a color far more amazing than pink and blue:  green!

While in the garden, I got a bit better camera angle on Mrs. Hummer, while staying farther away.  Note how her nest is placed:  under the overhang of the balcony for some rain protection, but close enough to the edge so that sunlight can keep the eggs warm while she dashes off for nectar.  Due to their frenetic metabolism, hummingbirds must feed at least once an hour.

  1. The blue colour of succulents gets enhanced when they take on the pink tinge too

    1. We didn't get much pink last winter because we didn't have a winter. This year is better.

  2. Green hills! It's almost hard to believe they can turn that color. I'm seeing more pink stems and leave edges too this year, which I guess must be the plants' response to the colder weather we had. I didn't realize that Aloe 'Blue Elf' turns pink - I picked up 2 pots of this Aloe last weekend, attracted by their blue and green color.

    1. Grown hard they get pinker in winter. They had a rough time here the last few years as they don't get much water where they are.

    1. Wonderful, but we still need more rain. It's an anxious winter.

  7. My father moved to California to be near my family two years ago. We were driving through the west San Fernando valley when he looked up and exclaimed "Hey! The hills are green! I didn't know they did that." 😊 Yes indeed, more rain please!

  8. I wish I had a frenetic metabolism! As far as green, I've grown so accustomed to greys, browns and golds, that green looks unreal now.
